The objectives of this study were to estimate the quantity of Dermanyssus gallinae occurring during one diurnal cycle in specific sites within a poultry house and to use special traps against D. gallinae in order to evaluate the intensity of invasion. The study was carried out in a poultry farm containing approximately 85 000 birds. Traps (20 cm long and one cm in diameter) were placed in the central part of the poultry house under feeding sites at a height of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.8 m from the floor in order to collect the mites and their various stages of development (eggs, larvae and nymphs). The largest number of D. gallinae and their developmental stages (1750) collected within a 24 h was contained in tube-traps at a height of 1.8 m, and the smallest number (588) at a height of 1.0 m from the floor. The number of stored eggs was also dependent on the level of paper tubes, Females of D. gallinse stored 2.29, 1.28 and 2.89 eggs at heights of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.8 m, respectively. Moreover, it was noted that the least number of mites was found in the tube-traps between 01.00 and 09.00 h independent of the height of the trap from the floor. Tube-traps might be used as one of several auxiliary, mechanical procedures in poultry red mite control.
