Adverse effects after administration of gestagens in dogs and cats.

The use of exogenous steroids, including gestagens, presents several adverse effects like cystic endometrial hyperplasia (hyperplasia glandularis cystica). Oestrogens stimulate endometrial development of the progesterone receptors. Progesterone and gestagens influence hyperplasia, proliferation and secretion of endometrial glands, thus creating the conditions for cyst growth. Endometritis-pyometra-complex and mammary tumours are the most common pathologic findings in bitches and queens treated with gestagens. Additionally, hyperglycaemia and acromegaly have been observed. These side effects are found to be mainly due to induced GH production in the mammary glands and was mediated by IGF-1. The other described adverse effects are adrenocortical suppression, hepatopathy, congenital malformations, prolonged pregnancy, behavioural disorders and local alterations.
