Extent of Toxoplasma gondii invasion in goat and sheep from the Olsztyn region [Polish]

The aim of study was to evaluate the prevalence of T. gondii infection in dairy-goats on a farm which had experienced reproduction-difficulties, miscarriages and a decrease in the general condition of some of the animals. 142 samples of goat's serum and 20 of sheep were examined between 2000-2002. the examinations were preformed using the direct agglutination assay with the Toxo-Screen DA commercial test to screen for the presence of immunoglobins IgG. In 2000 seropositive reactions in 63.6% of the goats were revealed in 1:40 titration, 78.3% in 2001 and 34.2% in 2002, whereas in the case of 1:4000 titrations of the examined serums they were 18.2%, 11.7% and 10.4% respectively. The sheep coming from the same farm and grazing on the same pastures were found to have 55% seropositive results in serum having 1:40 titration and in 10% in 1:4000 titration. The results of the study indicate the appearance of an outbreak of toxoplasmosis and the necessity to perform a screening study in dairy-goat and sheep farms to avoid possible infections in humans.
