Bioassay-guided isolation of anticandidal constituents from the stem and bark woods of Albizia myriophylla Benth.

The aqueous methanolic extract of the stem wood of the Albizia myriophylla was evaluated for its effect against four Candida species viz Candida albicans, C. krussei, C. parapsilosis and C. glabrata. The anticandidal activity was strongest in the chloroform fraction of the extract. Using direct TLC bioautography-guided assay, syringaldehyde was shown to be the active bioactive constituent. Candida parapsilosis was the most susceptible to syringaldehyde which showed an MIC value of 0.03 mg/L and MFC value of 0.20 mg/L, respectively. Chromatographic analysis of the moderately bioactive ethyl acetate fraction yielded flavan-3,4-diols, flavanone and flavone as the main constituents. The individual flavonoid, however, did not inhibit any of the tested Candida strains.
