Tissue Culture and Tissue Culture Technologies at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research: Roots of Regenerative Medicine, 1910-1950

Alexis Carrel's and Keith Porter's accomplishments at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, 1910-1950, were fundamental to the creation of the field of tissue culture. The Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (RIMR), since 1965 known as The Rockefeller University, was the focus of tissue culture research and technology in the first half of the twentieth century. Tissue culture and other closely-related fields of research were one of the most important roots of regenerative medicine technologies in the following decades. This paper will review aspects of the rise of tissue culture as an area of research, the evolution of its associated instrumentation, and its emergence as a standardized laboratory technique. For this review I draw substantially on unpublished reports in the archives of The Rockefeller University that document the evolution of tissue culture research in Alexis Carrel's laboratory.
