摘要

Description This is the 3rd edition of the classic series first published in 1987. The goal in this edition was to update and add materials on recent developments, especially for digital technology, mul-timodality imaging, radiation safety, and data handling in radiology. This was achieved by having nine additional coauthors who brought their expertise and experience to the various topical chapters. Purpose The stated purpose of the book is to explain the basic physics principles relating to diagnostic radiology. This is the source of its significant strengths and contributions but also some of its limitations for use as a textbook. Audience This text can serve as a textbook not only for students but also for medical residents in radiology and medical imaging. It can very nicely supplement the practical component for professionals working in the field. Content/Features It is very comprehensive and includes many topics in varying degrees of detail. In some respects it has the characteristics of an encyclopedia and is an excellent reference for looking up information on specific topics. It has retained some topics that are generally not applicable today, for example, intensifying screen intensification factor and 1st generation'computed tomography (CT), but this provides an insight into our heritage for students now entering the field of medical physics. The topic of CT is included in a general chapter, Tomographic Imaging with X-rays, along with other tomographic methods. Many issues are introduced but with brief statements of fact without explanations, and especially illustrations, that can be used in clinical imaging. The chapter on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) covers the basic physics but is completely void of significant issues relating to image quality such as noise and its relationship to acquisition time and image detail.
