The responses of individual olfactory cells in G. f. fuscipes and G. m. morsitans to the attractants 1-octen-3-ol, acetone, carbon dioxide, and phenols have previously been surveyed using the surface-contact technique. Most cells were activated by asingle chemical, but a few were activated by several, and some by none. Single-cell recordings were also made. Differences between the cell types are discussed in this paper for these species and G. pallidipes. The numbers and percentages of cell typesin samples on antennal olfactory cells are tabulated. The sample sizes were: G. f. fuscipes 214 with 137 cells responding; G. m. morsitans 182 with 136 cells responding; G. pallidipes 168 with 141 cells responding. It is suggested that differences in behavioural responsiveness to these attractants may be due to differences in the relative numbers of specialist and generalist cells activated by the substances.
