The VIABILITY OF take-or-pay contracts between South Africa's state-owned rail operator Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) and the country's coal producers could be at risk if the ongoing thermal coal price slump continues. Transnet GM commercial Divyesh Kalan voiced his concerns at a recent conference held by the Fossil Fuel Foundation, saying collective decisions should be taken now to ensure coal mining companies can continue to fulfil their take-or-pay rail obligations if the price of Richards Bay 6,000 kc NAR thermal coal falls below $45/t FOB.
