Tumor cells are often sensitive to oxidative stress, which is a chemotherapeutic principle, although the underlying mechanisms are still incompletely known. Malignant mesothelioma is a neoplastic disease with generally poor prognosis and resistance to therapeutic interventions. In a paper in this issue of Free Radical Biology and Medicine Nilsonne and co-workers have studied malignant mesothelioma cells of the sarcomatoid phenotype, which are known to be resistant to chemotherapy and have a particularly bad prognosis compared to the epithelioid phenotype. Both phenotypes of malignant cells were treated with selenite alone or in combination with doxorubicin and cell death as apoptosis was monitored
