For decades, considerable effort has been devoted to make more potent antioxidants than the natural antioxidant alpha-tocopherol (alpha-TOH, compound 1, Scheme 1), the most potent form of vitamin E in terms of peroxyl-radical-scavenging capability . Most of the structural modifications are based on the modification of alpha-tocopherol and a rich structural and activity relationship (SAR) has been gained during these endeavors . Liu and co-workers reported the novel idea of a combination of nanomaterial engineering with antioxidants in this issue . These Trolox-functionalized gold nanoparticles showed eight times greater reactivity toward peroxyl radicals. This strategy represents a novel and versatile way to make better antioxidants
