If the purpose of an article in the Cross-cutting Edge section of this journal is to make us stop and think, then Haji et al.'s 'Rethinking programme evaluation in health professions education: beyond "did it work?'" certainly fits the bill. The central arguments proposed by Haji et al.1 are that the evaluation questions we ask and methods we use are too narrow. More importantly, they provide preliminary advice on how we might do so.
