The Charter on Medical Professionalism, an internationally disseminated effort to define doctor professionalism, identifies three fundamental principles of professionalism in medicine: the primacy of patient welfare, patient autonomy, and social justice. However, within neither these core principles nor the 10 professional responsibilities that follow does there appear any explicit mention of humanistic qualities such as empathy.
