The value of cognitive psychological research for medical education as a discipline is considerable. For example, in the domain in which I work - assessment of medical competence and performance - numerous robust cognitive psychological research findings have influenced our thinking and practice. In particular, research into the nature of medical expertise and how it develops has taught us that expertise is not a trait, not a generic characteristic and not a trick that, once mastered, can be applied to any given medical problem. It cannot, for example, be seen as disconnected from the necessary knowledge.
