When a medical student heard her colleague tell a gay patient he would rot in hell, she was horrified. Such homophobia contravened university policies, social norms and human rights codes. More importantly, such behaviour will almost certainly have a negative impact on patient care and health. Evidence and experience indicate that knowledge must be married with respect, power sharing, integrity and empathy to achieve best outcomes. There is nothing hidden about a statement so discordant with institutional and social values of equality. This is a blatant and egregious misdemeanour.
