Context and setting Autopsies are no longer performed regularly in Australian hospitals, but the value of autopsies in medical training is generally underestimated. Observing autopsies helps students to:understand and integrate the effects of disease, injury and ageing processes that result in pathology;understand how to determine the cause and manner of death;identify and evaluate contributory conditions, and appreciate the frequent inconsistencies between diagnoses at the time of death and post-mortem findings.
