Practising heuristics without knowing it!

Heuristics enable us to engage in decision making, in contexts in which we have a less than complete dataset, using a process that may also require the deliberate discarding of some data. For a clinician, the heuristics-based process refers to the intuitive integration of clinical findings. It has been variously described as the 'rule-of-thumb', 'common-sense' or 'gut-feeling' approach.
