摘要

Context and setting Practice is a key component in surgical skill training. In liver surgeries, intraoperative risks refer mainly to bleeding, the control of which requires specialised skills and experience. However, in real life, it is not always possible to train a junior surgeon in these skills while the patient is bleeding. Why the idea was necessary Training models have been developed to help trainees acquire these critical skills. Although live animal models provide an alternative method, they require animal sacrifices and are not cost-effective. In addition, massive bleeding is not reproducible in live animals, which lessens the opportunities to practise the surgical skills required in a massive bleeding episode. Many other surgical simulation models have been developed, but none of them are sufficiently accurate to give the trainee a real-life surgical experience, mainly because these models cannot mimic the actual blood flow of a living person.
