Statins and atrial fibrillation; No effect or risk

It has been suggested that long-term treatment with a statin could reduce the risk of atrial fibrillation. Now, a meta-analysis of published and unpublished data from randomized trials has found no evidence to support the suggestion.Published data from 13 short-term trials showed a significant reduction of 39% in risk of atrial fibrillation, but there was significant heterogeneity between the trials. Data from 22 trials with at least 6 months of statin treatment and at least 100 patients per trial (105,791 patients in all) showed no significant reduction in risk of atrial fibrillation. In seven longer-term trials comparing intensive with standard statin therapy, there was also no evidence of a reduction in risk of atrial fibrillation.
