Low international prices thwart C1L thermal e-auction

BUYING INTEREST was lukewarm in Coal India's (CIL) recent e-auction for about 5 mt of thermal coal, with only half the offered volume finding buyers. CIL uses e-auctions to sell additional coal to contract volumes and boost its bottom line, but falling global prices have been undercutting its efforts by making imports of higher-quality coal a more attractive prospect than domestic coal.
