National Health Preference Data: A Useful Resource for Health Services Research

The science of health status and preference assessment has advanced considerably over the past 35 years. There are increasing applications of health status, health-related quality of life, and other patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in the monitoring of population health, evaluation of health interventions, and in cost-effectiveness analyses. The monitoring of population health and health economic studies has been hampered somewhat by the absence of normative data from nationally representative populations in the United States. Although there are some published normative data on several health preference and status measures, these studies don't report scores by diagnostic groupings and in some cases are based on relatively older data sources.
