There remain other supply pressures on coil prices. The most significant are cheap tonnage out of mills in the CIS. Ukrainian HR coil has been on offer at 175/t dollars cif Hong Kong and Singapore, with Russian coil nearer 180/t dollars cif. A further fall in Ukrainian HR coil to as little as 160/t dollars cif is considered to be possible. Pressure is also coming via low slab prices. Japanese mills reluctantly agreed to accept 160/t dollars cif for a reduced quantity of slab for non-integrated HR mill Yieh Loong in negotiations with China Steel Corp (CSC) its parent company for final quarter delivery.They have since then seen prices fall steadily. Dongkuk in South Korea is reported to have paid only US 156/t dollars cif for 40,000 tonnes of slab for heavy plate production from the Steel Co of Tubarao (CST) Brazil for first quarter delivery. Slab of this quality usually sells at a premium of US 10/t dollars to ordinary HR coil slab. The lower price appeared to be confirmed by news from Thailand that HR producer Sahaviriya Steel Industries had booked first quarter supplies of slab from a Russian source at 145/t dollars cif.
