The stirrings of recovery the Japanese detected in the second quarter have been sustained. Having achieved some growth in the first four months of the year the economy is no longer technically in recession, but the maintenance of growth depends mainly on export demand, as the long-awaited transformation of domestic economic structures needed for self-sustained recovery has scarcely begun.
