The general deterioration in prices shows markets have turned full circle for Japanese steelmakers. When domestic demand first went into decline, mills sustained sales volumes with foreign sales, usually at low prices, first to the USA, then due to the surprisingly early market recovery in Asia, in regional markets. These were so buoyant that prices rose and exerted upward pressure on Japanese domestic prices.
