The New Year rally that saw gold and oil clock up impressive gains also provided some momentum to the base metals. A combination of new fund money entering the complex and short covering were the main driving forces. However, US recession fears returned with a vengeance later in January and equity markets sold off heavily, dragging the base metals down with them as sentiment turned sour.
