There was more news this week on the work needed to be carried out by producers to comply with forthcoming waste management legislation. Again there is concern that certain parties won't be geared up in time. Farmers and horticulturalists need to start preparing for new waste management controls directed at the agricultural sector due next year; with the use of farm tips and the uncontrolled burning of waste on farms becoming illegal. It is not yet known when a consultation paper will be published, let alone when the controls will kick in, so little can be achieved until then. The National Farmers Union stated this week it was concerned over additional pressures put on its members. It would like to see the introduction of reuse and recycling schemes for packaging and other wastes available on an economic footing.
