The UK needs greater competition between local authorities as the country strives to meet tough recycling targets. This is the view of Minister of State for Environment and Climate Change Ian Pearson, who was speaking at the opening of Wastecycle's new domestic waste sorting and recycling facility in Nottingham (MRW, 22 September). While he praised the 1.5 million pounds plant that will recycle at least 95 percent of the 30,000 tonnes of waste it receives annually, he said more competition between neighbouring authorities would help gain wider public awareness and co-operation in schemes.
