Wider risks from hazardous waste

THERE HAVE BEEN TWO RECENT DEVELOPMENTS WITHIN THE WASTE INDUSTRY THAT are set to have legal implications on operators and contractors in the UK. The first centres on the latest edition of the revised Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations introduced in November 2009. The second looks to the ever-increasing standard of care that is required within industry practices, both past and present. Three years on from the introduction of the original WEEE Regulations in 2006, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has issued a set of revised regulations. These stem from a consultation in April 2009 and will come into force on 1 January 2010. Their main aim is to modernise and improve the monitoring of producer compliance schemes (PCSs).
