The UK is throwing away more than C650M every year by dumping and incinerating waste, according to a report published by Friends of the Earth (FoE). Research by the environmental campaign group reveals that if material currently being landfilled or incinerated was recycled, it would slash carbon emissions, reduce the need to import materials from abroad, and create new green jobs across the UK waste management industry. The Gone to waste: The valuable resources that European countries bury and burn report estimates the value of materials that could be recycled, based on an European Union-wide analysis of 2004 data that has been adjusted to account for the improved recycling rates in the UK since then.
