摘要

Residents in the Leicestershire town of Shepshed are fighting proposals to turn a derelict quarry into a 'landfill site and materials recycling facility (MRF). Leicestershire County Council has accepted plans from waste firm Biffa to use the Newhurst quarry, next to the M1 motorway, as a landfill site and MRF. Labour Party county councillor Kevin Parker said that the development would be detrimental for other businesses coming to the area and would deter investment in the town. He said: "Residents are not against Biffa. But that particular location is a gateway to the town. We feel that it is not appropriate at the moment to bring in this landfill site when we are trying to attract othertypes of business. We have 15,000 people in this town and there is a general consensus about this issue.
