This year sees the UK in the final sprint to reach 100 percent recoven of used tyres, ahead of a total ban on sending them to landfill, which comes into force in 2006. While whole tyres were banned from landfill in 2003, on July 16, 2006, shredded tyres (other than bicycle tyres and tyres with an outside diameter above 1,400mm) will also be excluded from being dumped in the ground. The End-of-Life Vehicles Directive has also meant that more and more vehicle tyres are being recovered and recycled. For 2005, the biggest challenge facing the recovered tyre sector in the UK is the search for end-users of old tyres and the development of markets for products made from reprocessed tyres. The UK currently produces around 450,000 tonnes of waste tyres each year, approximately 165,000 tonnes of which go to landfill.
