Surface maintenance for bilges and tanks on military submarines and aircraft carriers is often performed in hazardous environments that expose workers to multiple safety hazards or in locations where surfaces are physically inaccessible to the average shipyard worker unless a significant amount of piping or equipment is removed with additional work and cost. To improve worker safety, as well as reduce costs, the U.S. Navy plans to use a remotely operated climber to perform a wide variety of inspection, de-coating, and preservation tasks in shipboard areas that are unsafe or unreachable.
