Fouling of heat exchangers, reverse osmosis membrane surfaces, and other equipment handling process waters poses serious operational challenges in the efficient operation of industrial water systems. Depending on the water chemistry, plant operating conditions, metallurgy, etc., a number of deposits may be formed. These deposits reduce heat transfer, decrease the internal diameter of pipes, increase operating pressure, and often lead to premature equipment failure. Scaling can lead to deposition of suspended matter. Commonly encountered corrosion products include hydroxide/oxides of iron, copper, and zinc.
