This article is designed to assist the coatings engineer or specifier in identifying suitable protectivecoating systems for specific industrial environments. It provides guidelines for calculatingapproximate installed costs, expected coating life for each identified system, and how to determinethe most cost-effective systems. The effect of maintenance sequences on long-term costs and systemperformance also is reviewed. The article features the most commonly used generic systems intypical industrial environments, the service life for each, current material costs, and current field andshop painting costs. Guidelines for developing long-term life-cycle costs and the number of paintingsfor the expected life of the structure are included. The basic elements of economic analysis andjustification, and how to prepare a Present Value Analysis also are addressed.
