The Councils of the Institute of Mathematics and itsApplications and of the London MathematicalSociety have awarded the 2009 David CrightonMedal for services to mathematics and to the mathemat-ical community to Professor Keith Moffatt, FRS,FRSE, (Hon) FIMA, Emeritus Professor of Mathemat-ical Physics at the University of Cambridge, in recogni-tion of his contributions to fluid dynamics andmathematical modelling and for his leadership in manypositions in UK and international mathematical organisations.Keith Moffatt is one of the world's pre-eminent applied mathe-maticians, who has, over a research career spanning 50 years,made land-mark contributions to an extraordinarily wide rangeof problems in fluid mechanics. Seminal works include his cre-ation of the new sub-discipline of topological fluid mechanics, inwhich he used fundamental notions from topology to shed lighton the dynamics of turbulent flow; his discovery of unsteady cir-culatory motion in low-Reynolds number corner flow (theso-called Moffatt eddies); and in magnetohydrodynamics, inwhich he elucidated the interaction between fluid turbulence andmagnetic fields.
