Frequency Estimation: A Technical Note

The four-parameter sine fitting procedure, IEEE1057, provides an accurate and fast method for fitting a sine model to noisy data. IEEE 1057 fits the four-parameter model a + b. sin(ω_t) + c. cos(ω_t) to data, possibly with noise, using an iterative non-linear least-squares procedure. However, the procedure requires a good starting value of frequency ω (the other parameters are from a three-parameter sine fit) to guarantee convergence. The heuristic method described here provides a simple robust method for obtaining starting values.
