HIT potential to transform quality improvement.

The potential for health information technology (HIT) to transform quality improvement is being realized with the adoption of the electronic health record (EHR) and health information exchange. Federal meaningful use and certified EHR criteria require data standardization for information exchange and reporting of Clinical Quality Measures (McCartney, 2011). Quality data will need to be standardized, extracted from the clinical information system, and submitted electronically to regulatory organizations.
