In industrial, utility, and commercial steam generating systems, volatile filming corrosion inhibitors are increasingly utilized to control corrosion of low carbon steel (CS) and copper alloys throughout the steam-water cycle. According to Karen Person with GE Water & Process Technologies, author of CORROSION 2015 paper no. 6180, "Novel Volatile Filming Inhibitor Treatment Program Provides Improved Corrosion Control in Industrial Boiler Systems," two key aspects in a steam generating system require consideration and treatment for efficient heat transfer and corrosion protection. The first aspect for maintaining a clean and functioning system is the boiler feedwater. Pretreatment by mechanical and chemical programs is important to minimize the incoming contaminants. In addition to pretreatment, internal boiler chemicals such as polymer-based and phosphate-based programs can be used to protect against deposition and scaling.
