The application of cathodic protection (CP) to the soil side of asphalt storage tank bottoms requires special consideration because of the elevated temperatures of the tank bottom and surrounding tank cushion. The results of a unique approach to an economical impressed current CP system are discussed. The new system, applicable to both new and retrofitted asphalt tank bottoms, incorporates a symmetrical high-temperature anode, cables, and factory connections with increased anode current densities. Heavy-duty reference electrodes with high-temperature watering tubes and thermocouples are included to measure the exact temperatures under the tank, and provide temperature-corrected potential measurements.
