Parenting from a jordanian perspective: Findings from a qualitative study

Family functioning, parenting, and chil-drearing are universal, yet the particulars of these developmental tasks are influenced by a number of factors including cultural beliefs and practices. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to further increase knowledge about Jordanian parents' understanding of parenting. A semi-structured, open-ended, one-on-one interview was conducted with a convenience sample of 110 Jordanian parents recruited from four health centers. Themes identified by the researcher included parenting as embraced by Islam, transferring of cultural values and traditions, and parenting as a challenge. The researchers concluded that the strong interplay of Islamic teachings, sociocultural values, and traditions were important to parenting behavior and its effectiveness.
