SA union closes in on strike

South African union Solidarity cranked up the pressure on coal producers this week by announcing it would issue them with 48-hour strike notices today, with indefinite strikes planned to commence midnight Sunday (August 12). However as MCR went to press today it's understood that no strike notices had been formally issued. Solidarity, a minority union, has been negotiating with coal companies through the Chamber of Mines over pay and conditions for its coal mining members for several months.
