MMO-Coated Titanium Anodes for Cathodic Protection—Part 1

The application of mixed metal oxide (MMO) titanium electrodes for anode bed and concrete impressed current cathodic protection (CP) installations dates back to the 1980s. MMO anodes have been increasingly used for the last 25 years because of their demonstrated reliability. Understanding the electrochemical reactions on the surface of an anode is important for selecting the anode material, the lead wire connection, and the wire insulation during design of CP. In the case of MMO-coated titanium anodes, it is also necessary to examine the composition of the coating, the method of application, and the quality control program.
