Tsunamis and Geo-Physical Warnings Workshop at the Lighthill Institute of Mathematical Science

In 2005, it was clear that the recent Asian tsunami that killed260,000 people revealed our lack of understanding of thescience of tsunamis and the inadequacies of the warningsystems. A Workshop on warnings was held at the Lighthill Insti-tute of Mathematical Sciences (LIMS) on 17 December 2009with the support of the IMA. Since then there have been twofurther natural disasters with major international repercussions– the Haitian earthquake of January 2010 and the Icelandvolcano ash plume of April 2010, neither of which had advancedwarnings broadcast.
