California Water District Uses Inorganic Zinc to Replace Lead Coating on Water Pipelines

The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EB-MUD) in Oakland, California uses three aqueducts to transport drinking water from the Mokelumne River in the Sierra Nevada Mountains for 1.3 million con-sumers who reside in the eastern portion of California's San Francisco Bay area. To ensure continued protection against corrosion, EBMUD started a project in 2001 to recoat the above-ground segments of these large-diameter steel pipelines, which is the first time these pipes had been repainted since 1976.
