Iam a 55 year old male. At university in the early 70s I gravitated strongly towards pure maths and tried my hand at; research in functional analysis. Feeling a bit detached from the real world and, dare I say it, a shade disillusioned with the obscure area in which I found myself, I recklessly switched to an industrial career in 1976 Reckless because the interview gave me no clue as to the new world I was entering. The culture shock on arrival was massive. Fission of the maths and statistics departments of my Alma Mater had blessed me with an office to myself for the majority of my research. I've never had one since On my first working day, no one that mattered was expecting me I had to climb over one desk to get to mine in the corner of an office with twelve fellow mathematicians.
