Small Grants Scheme Activity Report

摘要

The 64th European Study Group with Industry followed the normal Study-Group format of having real-world problems of current concern presented on the first day, concentrated effort discussing the problems in informal groups through days two to four and summing up of progress on day five. This year, companies brought us problems to tackle that concerned temperature of water seals in gas holders (National Grid), simulating wind speeds at wind farms (E.O.N), accuracy of train odometry (Reliable Data Systems), behaviour of commercial-property values (The Actuarial Profession), use of the "long tail" in data from customers' "shopping baskets" (Unilever), and the identification and location of clusters in mobile-phone calls (Motorola).
