Symposium Celebrating the Centennial of ICMI(International Commission on Mathematical Instruction)

In 1908, during the fourth International Congress of Mathemati-cians, which took place in Rome from 6 to 11 April, wascreated the International Commission on the Teaching ofMathematics (Commissione Internazionale per l'insegnamentomatematico, Commission Internationale de l'EnseignementMathematique, Internationale Mathematische Unter-richtskommission). The first to formulate a proposal for the insti-tution of an organisation of this type was David Eugene Smith, aprofessor at Teachers College of New York, who was profoundlyinterested in education and in the history of mathematics. Thefirst president was Felix Klein, eminent mathematician and pro-moter of significant reforms in the teaching of mathematics inGermany. Klein was an unflagging and enthusiastic promoter ofthe commission during its early period.
