UK Mathematical Societies' support for new Maths A-level

The UK's learned and professional societies for mathematicshave underlined their support for a new A-level aimed atstudents who want to be able to apply mathematicalmethods rather than focus on mathematical theory. The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) andThe London Mathematical Society (LMS) do not support areport published on 10 July 2009 by a group of academics whocriticised the proposed Use of Mathematics A-level. Instead, thesocieties believe the new A-level would create new opportunitiesenabling more students to carry on with their mathematicalstudies beyond the age of 16 by offering a route which reflectstheir interests and abilities.
