Coal freight trains could soon be returning to the Weardale Railway heritage line in County Durham, after a gap of almost 20 years. Regular services from Wolsingham to Scunthorpe could be in operation by July if ongoing trials by the line's majority owner, Chicago-based Iowa Pacific Holdings, prove successful. The Weardale Railway said: "Two trial trains with wagons will be operated in June. They will be hauled by Colas and utilise the usual 100 tonne coal wagons, although in this case not with the full complement of 21 wagons.
