CCS must be fitted to new coal plants -- EA

The UK's Environment Agency (EA) says new coal-fired power stations should not be built without the ability to capture and store carbon emissions, unless they are testing CCS in some way. The EA's chairman, Lord Chris Smith, has warned that building coal-fired power plants without carbon capture and storage (CCS) abilities would "lock" the UK into using high carbon technology for the foreseeable future, which is nonsense of course but whjat would a former-arts minister know. He said, "Building a new generation of coal fired power stations without capturing the carbon emissions would lock the UK into using high carbon technology for decades to come - this is not an environmentally sustainable way of generating power given the challenges we face with climate change.
