Power prices in the UK have generally been on a downward trend over the past couple of weeks. However, prices remain firm for the time of year, largely on the back of high gas prices. The UK spark spread (the value of converting gas into power, via a CCGT) is currently 10.16 pounds/MWh. This is ower than the equivalent dark spread (the value of converting coal into power) which currently stands at 15.39 pounds/MWh. This should mean that generators run their coal plant before gas plant, although this calculation is missing one crucia element; the cost of EU emission trading scheme allocations.
